How does Fast Fashion affect Austin?
The affects of fast fashion are seen on more of a global level, but the pollution from fast fashion and other harmful environmental practices are seen anywhere. Austin has landfills, and when you throw away your old clothes, thats where they go. Fast fashion factories emit waste that decreases the quality of our air and add to pollution. Many fast fashion stores are in Austin, including almost all of the stores at local malls, such as Macy's, Old Navy, and Forever 21.
Is anyone in Austin making a difference?
There are a few different local clothing companies in Austin that practice sustainable ways, including Vada, Miranda Bennet, and Raven and Lily. There are also many local 2nd hand shops, which give other options than just throwing clothes away. It's also important for each individual to do their part to make a difference.
How Can Teens in Austin make a difference?
Chances are, if you are a teenager, you like to shop for clothes. But the clothes we buy have an impact on our environment. Here are some ways that teenagers can make a difference while not supporting the fast fashion industry:
1. Thrift shop with your friends- Shopping with friends is a great way to past time and have fun, but buying new clothes often is not good for the environment. The best way for consumers to not support fast fashion and the pollution of our planet is buying used clothes. Thrift stores have many unique and affordable clothing pieces. You can pass time by looking through the racks upon racks of clothes. Buying from thrift stores supports your local organizations and keeps you from buying new clothes that use up our resources. My favorite thrift stores in Austin are Austin Pets Alive Thrift, Savers, Goodwill, Texas Thrift, and Top Drawer.
2. Sell your old clothes on Depop- Selling clothes on Depop is easy and gives your clothes a new home instead of ending up in the landfill. Depop is an app that lets you sell your old clothes to people from all over the world. In order to get an account, all you have to do is download the app and sign up. If you want to sell clothes, you make a Paypal account and take a few photos of your clothes to upload along with a description. Just like that, millions of users can see your clothes. When someone buys them, Depop provides you with instructions on how to ship out your clothes and receive your money.
3. Have a clothing swap with friends-My personal favorite idea that I would like to do after the end of the pandemic is a clothing swap. A clothing swap is an event where you can get new clothes and get rid of old ones without having to buy or throw away anything. Invite everyone over to someones house and have them bring their old clothes. Everyone can place their clothes in a pile on the ground or on a table. Sort through and see if there is anything you like and would want to take home. Encourage everyone to take only as much as they brought so everyone gets a chance to get new clothes.
